Kennedy relative's murder conviction reinstated

New York (AFP) - Connecticut's top court reinstated Friday the murder conviction of a nephew of the slain Robert F. Kennedy over the beating death of a 15-year-old girl more than four decades ago.
In a 4-3 decision, a divided Connecticut Supreme Court ordered a lower court to reject an appeal by Michael Skakel, a nephew to Kennedy through the late attorney general's widow Ethel. Defense attorney Hubert Santos did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Brazilian police: Greek ambassador killed by wife's lover

RIO DE JANEIRO (AP) — Police in Brazil believe that Greece's ambassador to the country was killed by his wife's lover under her orders in a house in the Rio area and have detained three suspects, authorities said Friday.
Ambassador Kyriakos Amiridis went missing on Monday in Nova Iguacu, a city just north of Rio de Janeiro, where the ambassador had been vacationing. The couple lived most of the time in the capital of Brasilia.
On Friday, police investigator Evaristo Pontes Magalhaes said that 29-year-old police officer Sergio Gomes Moreira Filho had confessed to killing Amiridis, alleging self-defense.
He said the policeman was having an affair with the ambassador's 40-year-old wife, Francoise.

Budget!! FG To Spend This Large Sum On Generators In 2017 (See Details)

The Federal Government, its agencies, ministries and institutions will spend N8.4bn on the maintenance, fuelling and purchase of new generators in the 2017 fiscal year. Out of the budgeted figure, the maintenance of generators will gulp N1.8bn; fuelling, N4.1bn; while the purchase of new generators will cost N2.5bn. These figures are contained in the 2017 budget, which was submitted to a joint session of the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari on December 14, 2016.

Naira scarcity: Nigerians accuse FG of investing in MMM

Some Nigerians have accused the federal government of investing in the popular Ponzi scheme, MMM, following reports of scarcity of small naira denominations in the country.

The accusations surfaced after sources in the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) disclosed to the media that the apex bank failed to print small naira denominations for about a year due to the current economic recession.

The sources explained that CBN did not award contract for the printing of the notes such as N5, N10, N20 and N50 usually done abroaddue to the high cost of printing the banknotes.

1,237 Nigerians stopped from entering Germany this year

Berlin — No fewer than 1, 237 Nigerians were stopped from entering Germany this year, as German police are on track to turn away some 20,000 migrants at the country’s borders, airports and sea ports in 2016.

From January until the end of November, 19,720 people were stopped from entering the country, the Neue Osnabruecker Zeitung, NOZ, reported, citing numbers from the German Federal Police.

Statistics for December are yet to be compiled, the newspaper said.
